thai contemporary home
The traditional Chiang Mai house is centered on communal living & a sense of family. The floor plan is oriented towards the four cardinal directions, with the belief that the hierarchy of family members determine the locations that certain elders, parents, sons, or daughters would sleep. The overall layout is a relatively open floor plan with simple enclosed volumes for bedrooms. The home also has a front patio directed south & a detached kitchen, which both serve to keep heat out of the main living areas. Raising the house onto stilts not only allows for natural cross ventilation, but also prevents flooding during Northern Thailand's torrential rainy season.
